Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

The theme this week is book quotes and Jana’s prompt runs
Share your favorite book quotes that fit a theme of your choosing! These could be quotes about books/reading, or quotes from books. Some examples are: quotes for book lovers, quotes that prove reading is the best thing ever, funny things characters have said, romantic declarations, pretty scenery descriptions, witty snippets of dialogue
Now, I do come from a literary background – in terms of my education if not my upbringing! – and collecting quotations has become second nature to me. There are some books where, however much you enjoy them, there is nothing quotable in them; there are others where the language is so extraordinary and beautiful and heart wrenching that they leap out. And, yes, I am that sort of fellow who highlights, underlines, annotates, makes notes and keeps a little book so that I can write out these gems….
So, these are some of the most quotable books that I have come across recently. Most are rather serious and moving – many focus on the idea of and value of story. But I have included a lovely selection of Wodehouse quotes to raise the mood!
Enjoy!
The Island Of Missing Trees, Elif Shafak
The Death of Vivek Oji, Akwaeke Emezi
Cloud Cuckoo Land, Anthony Doerr
The Silence of the Girls, Pat Barker
Wolf Hall, Hilary Mantel
Piranesi, Susanna Clarke
This is How You Lose the Time War, Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone
Hamnet, Maggie O’Farrell
Life After Life, Kate Atkinson
Jeeves and Wooster, P G Wodehouse
As always, your comments and thoughts below and let me know what you think of these books, or any other quote-worthy reads you have come across!

Omg, so many gorgeous quotes. The only book I’ve read here is Vivek Oji and oof, those quotes hit so hard. Makes me weepy for that book all over again 🥲 I can’t wait to read the others on this list that are on my TBR!

I love the quotes that you’ve shared. I completely understand what you’re saying about some books are a great read but not quotable and others are just rammed full of quotes. I’ve started highighting passages on my kindle and using little sticky tabs in my physical books but it never crossed my mind to actually write them out so they were easily accessible. I might have to start doing this

It was something I started at Uni as a part of ‘studying’ a book and now it’s just a habit!

Isn’t it awesome how these quotes affects us? how we can relate? Love collecting quote’s too. From your list, I love the “He was so beautiful he made the air around him dull.” Argghh… reminds me of the teenage years. 😅🤣🤭

I loved both that one and the sequel! Barker does some of the best of (so many) myth retellings!

It’s hard for me to highlight and mark up physical books, but I do keep a quote journal so I can write down the ones that speak to me. Sometimes I’m too lazy to actually write them down, though. And if I take a picture of them with my phone, I forget I did it and they never make it to my quote journal. LOL. I need to be better about this!
You chose some lovely quotes. I especially like the first one. I agree that now is just a tiny blip in the great, grand scheme of things.
Happy TTT!
