Top Ten Tuesday: Authors with a fun social media presence

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Taking a step away from books and looking at authors is a little weird for me: it is generally the books that interest me and not the people behind them. But there are a few authors I follow on Twitter and Instagram, often simply because I have been presumtuous enough to tag them on my reviews, when I remember, that is. And wasn’t there a little mini furore about that on Twitter a little while back…. Anyway here goes….

Laura Ellen Anderson (Twitter @Lillustrator) and Instagram (@laura_ellen_anderson)

Laura Ellen Anderson write the Amelia Fang series, a vampire girl who, along with her best friends Florence (a yeti), Grimaldi (Death’s grandson) and Squashy (her pet pumpkin) have adventures.

She is top of my list because my daughter dressed as Amelia Fang on World Book Day and she left a lovely comment on my Insta photo of her!

Neil Gaiman (Twitter @neilhimself)

Choosing Neil Gaiman because, well, he’s Neil F***ing Gaiman! And this image is – probably faked and / or just apocryphal – but I would so love it to be real!

Rick Riordan (Twitter @camphalfblood)

Only read a few of the Percy Jackson books, if I am honest, but I do love a bit of snark from time to time!

Natasha Pulley (Twitter @natasha_pulley)

Natasha Pulley’s books – The Watchmaker of Filigree Street and The Lost Future of Pepperharrow and The Bedlam Stacks – are lovely and fantastical and tender. And her presence on Twitter is delightful and self-deprecating… and she seems just to love books!

Kiran Millwood Hargrave (Instagram @kiran_mh)

The Mercies is a delicious book and could – should? – have been on the Women’s Prize Longlist… and which I really need to finish reading.

And her response to not being on the longlist was the epitome of graciousness.

Akwaeke Emezi (Twitter @azemezi Instagram @azemezi)

Just an amazing author – they wrote the sublime Freshwater and Pet – and a beautiful, brave and open person who is extraordinarily honest on Twitter.

Samantha Shannon (Twitter @say_shannon)

Author of The Priory of the Orange Tree, and a fun, chilled presence on Twitter. Very relateable.

V. E. Schwab (Twitter @veschwab Instagram @veschwab)

Confession time: I’ve not read anything by Schwab but I have been meaning to, honest! But she is a witty and fun presence on Twitter and Insta.

Stephen King (Twitter @StephenKing)

Like Neil Gaiman, there are some names on Twitter that you cannot not follow and Stephen King is witty, acerbic and outspoken.

Erin Morgenstern (Twitter @erinmorgenstern)

Funny and witty – and a genuine passion for books – comes through Erin’s Twitter and she is a pleasure to spot a tweet from.

And she has the most photogenic cat I have ever seen.

Bonus: Casey McQuiston (Twitter @casey_mcquiston)

Author of Red, White and Royal Blue, and if this tweet doesn’t warrant giving her a place on this list, I don’t know what would!

So, there we go: ten of the authors that I follow on Twitter and Instagram – generally funny, witty, vibrant and snarky people who adore books and writing, their own and others!

Again, a David Mitchell book is an event, and a thing of beauty! But the music industry is not my natural setting and again I was caught between this and another book – Daisy Jones and the Six in this case – and Daisy Jones was read first. This time, because it was nominated on a book club I was part of.

Bonus: The Lies of Locke Lamora, Scott Lynch

They say that the Thorn of Camorr can beat anyone in a fight. They say he steals from the rich and gives to the poor. They say he’s part man, part myth, and mostly street-corner rumor. And they are wrong on every count.

Only averagely tall, slender, and god-awful with a sword, Locke Lamora is the fabled Thorn, and the greatest weapons at his disposal are his wit and cunning. He steals from the rich – they’re the only ones worth stealing from – but the poor can go steal for themselves. What Locke cons, wheedles and tricks into his possession is strictly for him and his band of fellow con-artists and thieves: the Gentleman Bastards.

This one has been on my TBR for years. Literally years. I have heard nothing but praise for it, but so far have never quite got around to reading it! Go figure!

So, there we go: a range of books that I got in 2020 – save for the Scott Lynch – and do regret not reading during the year. Is regret the right word? Probably not to be honest: I do not regret the reading that I did do last year at all. But these are books that I would like to find time to catch up with this year – before prize season hits us again!

  2. Oh my gosh! Somehow, I’ve never even thought to look up Laura Ellen Anderson? I’m ashamed of myself. My daughter absolutely loves that series, though. It’s so cute. I love that your daughter dressed as Amelia Fang! Dang, I forgot Neil Gaiman on my list, too, but heck yes! I love how much he interacts with his fans.
